Building a Better Future for Teckels

Teckels ‘Paw Appeal’ is under way….. target £100,000

A specific fund raising initiative has been launched to help fund the new visitor centre build project, and depending on how much is raised we hope to carry on to upgrade the kennels, add extra re-homing space and in the future, we even hope to incorporate our own animal hospital.

The aim of the ‘Paw Appeal’ is to raise substantial funds to help the Welfare & Visitor Centre Project, which including all the hopes and dreams, will eventually develop the building’s upper floor and improve the rest of the site, but by April the first phase will provide the desperately needed facilities and public areas that provide the day to day running of the sanctuary.

We want to increase puppy classes and obedience training and increase the dog agility events, also a canine first aid course will soon be available. A covered ménage in one of the paddocks is also a future aim and would provide an all weather facility for the training programmes.

Teckels did not have the capacity to provide for the influx of animals and visitors that pass through their doors, somewhat due to the fact that they are one of the only shelters that find homes for animals regardless of their age or condition.

The new reception and much bigger shop will be housed in the spacious welcome area and will lead on to the new  grooming parlour, kitten house, food preparation areas, kitchen, laundry and storage areas. The battle to keep clean animal bedding dry will become a distant memory.

The freezing staff carry on as usual set up in temporary buildings to enable them to keep the sanctuary open as the building makes progress and we are promised that the roof will be on by the end of February……we shall see!

The building will provide better working conditions for the Teckels staff and volunteers, and will also provide a resource centre offering opportunities and facilities that the wider community could benefit from. As well as the fun days, dog shows, seasonal Fayres and fund raising activities, visitors have enjoyed mini tours and hands on experiences as brownies, cub scouts, school outings and disabled groups learn and enjoy their Teckels experience. Volunteers come to walk dogs and cuddle cats, in future they can even get a coffee in  our welcome area.

If you would like to support the ‘Paw Appeal’, there are many ways that you can get involved. This specific appeal has a dedicated webpage where you can donate to the fund, organise events in aid of the appeal and buy tickets for other events that are supporting the cause. URGENT LAUNDRY APPEAL Print E-mail

WE ARE CURENTLY STRUGGLING TO KEEP ON TOP OF OUR WASHING AT LEAST UNTIL THE MUCH NEEDED NEW LAUNDRY FACILITIES ARE ADDED TO THE SITE. WE ALWAYS LIKE TO KEEP OUR DOGS AND CATS AS WARM AND COSY AS POSSIBLE, AS WELL AS HAVING CLEAN SHEETS IN THEIR RUNS TO LIE ON, SO WE ARE ASKING IF ANY VOLUNTEERS WOULD BE WILLING TO TAKE SOME HOME, OR IF ANY ONE HAS ANY OLD BEDDING THEY COULD GIVE US INCLUDING TOWELS, BLANKETS AND SHEETS THAT THEY NO LONGER USE, WE WOULD BE EXTREMELEY GREATFUL.

MANY THANKS

Animal Welfare and Visitor Centre Print E-mail

Teckels is currently in the process of building a new Animal Welfare and Visitor Centre, which will replace and upgrade the facilties and services that are currently being housed in temporary accomodation. The build Plans were passed earlier this year to provide Teckels with a new Welfare centre building to house the services which provide the day to day running of the sanctuary and its business. Not just to ensure good working practice for the staff and volunteers, but to also provide a resource centre offering opportunities and facilities that the wider community could benefit from.

The aim of the new building is to replace the very cramped reception where boarders are constantly booking in and out and where folks looking to provide a home for an animal are able to access information more easily.

The extra space will include an educational facility for the many groups and individuals who already benefit from their visit to Teckels, and the veterinary clinic ear marked for the future will not only save the charity in excess of £45,000 per year in vet bills, but could also provide a ‘hands on’ facility for student vets and nurses from practices and colleges which would also be an added boost to Teckels income.

Most of the buildings being demolished to clear the site will be re-cycled and energy saving methods and materials will help us make savings on our heating and lighting bills.
Teckels remains open both for boarding and rehoming animals as normal during this build project, however, access for the general public may be restricted for a limited time. We are always in need of new bedding for the animals, particularly sheets, large towels, fleeces and blankets. At the moment in particular, after fighting a losing battle with our washing machines, we are running low on clean bedding. Any old linen that you think you could donate would be greatly appreciated!

We are also in need of some new (or used) cat carriers. Various trips to the vets, new owners, etc. has taken its toll on our carriers and they desperately need to be replaced.
